UpdatedAug 28, 2011 1:06 AM ETSAN FRANCISCO (AP)One early mistake did nothing to rattle Matt Schaub.Schaub stepped back to pass on the first play of the game andthrew right to 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks a few yards away. After that rare blunder, Houston's reliable quarterback wasspot-on.Schaub recovered after the early interception, leading theTexans on scoring drives in each of their next three series in a30-7 exhibition rout of the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers onSaturday night.''We had a lot of early mistakes and turnovers but guys bouncedback and made plays,'' Schaub said. ''I think that shows thematurity of our team that those mistakes aren't going tolinger.''Troy Nolan made two interceptions for new defensive coordinatorWade Phillips, returning the first pick 73 yards for a touchdown togive the Texans 24 straight first-half points after they fellbehind 7-0.Schaub enhanced an already impressive preseason, going 16 for 24for 180 yards and a touchdown for the unbeaten Texans (3-0). Sofar, Houston looks very much like an AFC contender, although theTexans had to remove 2010 NFL rushing leader Arian Foster when histroublesome hamstring began bothering him again late in the firstquarter.Coach Gary Kubiak is optimistic Foster will be ready for theopener Sept. 11 against the defending AFC South championIndianapolis Colts.''We don't think it's anything worse than what we were dealingwith before,'' Kubiak said of Foster, who sat out the firstpreseason game.San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith wound up 2 for 6 for 17yards, just 4 more yards in the air than he lost in two sacks. There weren't very many people to boo him this time. The Candlestick Park stands were about one-third full a weekafter things turned violent and two men were shot in a parking lotafter the 49ers beat the Bay Area rival Oakland Raiders 17-3.NFL security chief Jeff Miller attended Saturday's game and saidhe's optimistic Candlestick's beefed up security and increasedpolice presence can help prevent further incidents of violence thisseason.''We all recognize what happened last week was very unsettlingand something we want to change,'' Miller said. ''Tonight what Isaw in the parking areas was that the police were extremelyengaged. They did a fantastic job working with the fans, trashremoval, little things like that.''The 49ers got more highlights from their first-team defense thanfrom Smith and Co.''Obviously we took our lumps tonight,'' Smith said. ''It wasrough for all of us. We have to find a way to get something goingand get right.''Brooks intercepted that first pass by Schaub and returned it 13yards for San Francisco's lone points - and this was hardly thekind of performance new coach Jim Harbaugh hoped to see at thisstage.Houston had run 32 offensive plays to San Francisco's eightmidway through the second quarter and the Texans managed 15 firstdowns to the 49ers' one. The overall first downs: Texans 28, 49ers6. Total yards: Houston 417, San Francisco 105.''To me, they're one of the best offenses in the NFL, so it wasa good test for today going against a fast offense like that,''49ers linebacker Patrick Willis said.Backup QB Colin Kaepernick got his shot for San Francisco. Hedidn't look much better than Smith.Kaepernick, the team's second-round draft pick out of Nevada, threw the interception to Nolan on his fifth play from scrimmageand third pass attempt after two previous incompletions.Smith returned for a three-and-out and then another series inwhich he threw an interception in the closing seconds of the firsthalf.Running back Frank Gore, hoping for a new contract before theSept. 11 opener with defending division champion Seattle, didn'tplay.Smith was sacked by Connor Barwin on third down on SanFrancisco's first drive for a 6-yard loss. Barwin ran over lefttackle Joe Staley.Antonio Smith sacked Smith on the next Niners drive. So Phillipshas to be pleased with how his unit looked Saturday night - and inthe preseason as a whole. Houston's passing defense ranked last inthe NFL in 2010.''Confidence wise, it's certainly important for us to be wherewe are,'' Phillips said. The Texans have 13 sacks from nine players and have forced seventurnovers in the first three exhibition games.Donte Whitner's pass-interference penalty late in the firstquarter helped set up Derrick Ward's 1-yard TD run that put Houstonahead 10-7. The points were the first given up by San Francisco'sNo. 1 defense in three preseason games.Neil Rackers kicked field goals of 27 and 47 yards for Houston.Foster had 38 yards on eight rushes.''It's a bitter pill to swallow when you're beaten thatthoroughly in pretty much all phases,'' Harbaugh said. ''We're notgoing to have any loser talk or hang our heads. UpdatedAug 28, 2011 12:30 PM ETBy JOE SMITHTimes Staff WriterTAMPA - The Bucs' LeGarrette Blount worked a lotthis offseason on becoming a more well-rounded running back, including improving his pass-catching.Though Blount rushed for 1,007 yards as a rookie last season, hehad just five receptions for 14 yards. The Bucs gave Blount a chance Saturdayagainst the Dolphins. QB Josh Freeman targeted him five times, andBlount made three catches for a team-high 62 yards, including a52-yarder in the first quarter on a checkdown pass."A lot of teams don't respect the fact that I can actually goout and catch a pass," Blount said. "So when I do it, it opens up alot of things for me and for our team."On the 52-yarder, Blount caught the ball near the right hash, scampered up the sideline and cut back to avoid a defender beforegetting hauled down at the Miami 29."I was thinking touchdown," Blount said. "That's the only thingon my mind: Get a touchdown by any means necessary."He didn't have as good a day rushing, with five carries for 10yards.ON THE MEND: TE Kellen Winslow, making his preseason debut, leftearly in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He likely wouldhave returned if it had been a regular-season game."No big deal," Winslow said.Winslow made a third-down catch for 6 yards near the rightsideline then limped off the field. The Bucs held Winslow out of the firsttwo games as a precaution, wanting to make sure his chronicallysore right knee made it to Week 1 of the regular season.WELCOME BACK: WR Arrelious Benn, making his preseason debutafter offseason left knee surgery, showed no ill effects, includingpicking up 11 yards on a reverse late in the first quarter.Benn, who started, made one catch for 12 yards."It feels good just being out there with the guys, being in myplace and doing anything I can to help the offense and get us towin games and all those little things to help the team," Bennsaid.DT Brian Price (pelvis) also made his preseason debut.LEE LOSES IT: James Lee, who is competing with Jeremy Truebloodfor the starting right tackle job, had a rough night. It includedpicking up a 15-yard personal foul for his role in a scuffle withDolphins LB Jason Taylor. It was one of three penalties called onLee in one series; the others were for illegal formation and falsestart.HOT CORNER: With CB Aqib Talib (hamstring) out again, CB E.J.Biggers and CB Myron Lewis (making his preseason debut) took turnscovering Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall. Each drew a pass interference penalty. Marshall beat Biggers fora 60-yard touchdown on the Dolphins' first possession with astutter-and-go route along the right sideline, racing 30 yardsafter the catch."I just got to finish," Biggers said.Biggers would finish when he forced a Marshall fumble late inthe second quarter. After Marshall caught the ball in the rightflat, he broke a Biggers tackle and ran upfield. But Biggers chasedhim from behind and knocked the ball loose. LB Geno Hayesrecovered."You can never give up on a play, no matter what." Biggers said."You fall on the ground, you've got to get up like it's hot."FLAG OF DAY: The Bucs received a 15-yardunsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the Dolphins' first touchdownbecause coaches challenged the call. Under new rules, all scoringplays are automatically reviewed.Miscellany: S Ahmad Black (ankle) and DT Roy Miller (knee) alsowere inactive. P/K Michael Koenen had another strong game, averaging 40.2 yards per punt. TE Nathan Overbay kept the ball fromhis winning touchdown in the fourth quarter: "Hopefully, I getmore, but one is good to start with." ? 2009 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. cheap mlb jerseys, cheap custom jerseys, cheap jerseys free shipping, wholesale buccaneers jersey, cheap baseball jerseys, cheap nfl jerseys, cheap basketball jerseys, cheap football jerseys, wholesale 49ers jersey, wholesale giants jersey, cheap nba jerseys, cheap nhl jerseys, wholesale redskins jersey, cheap jerseys from china, wholesale steelers jersey, wholesale titans jersey, cheap authentic jerseys, wholesale eagles jersey, wholesale jets jersey, wholesale rams jersey, cheap jerseys for sale, wholesale chargers jersey, cheap jerseys, cheap throwback jerseys, cheap ncaa jerseys, cheap soccer jerseys, wholesale raiders jersey, wholesale seahawks jersey, cheap jerseys usa

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Reggie Wayne spoke up to defend Curtis Painter, then dramatically backed up his words.Wayne was offended when the Colts brought Kerry Collins out of retirement to back up injured quarterback Peyton Manning and possibly start if Manning isn't ready for the opener.Wayne believes Painter's knowledge of Indianapolis' complex offense gives the team its best chance to win games if Manning's neck isn't fully healed in the next few weeks. Wayne sounded off on Collins' acquisition Wednesday and promised he would go all out to help Painter."I'm going balls to the walls for him, man,'' Wayne said. "I'm not going to let anybody just come in here. I don't care who you are. I mean I'm not going to let anyone just come in here and just push someone aside like you're that dog now, you know what I mean. I'm sure Curtis is thinking it, and if he's not thinking it, I'll take the challenge for him.''Wayne caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter Friday night in a 24-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers. A look of satisfaction crossed his face when asked about Painter's performance."You kind of want to go out there and make plays for him, to give him that confidence,'' Wayne said. "He did a good job.''Painter said he appreciated Wayne's words of encouragement."I think it makes you feel good,'' Painter said. "That's kind of what you go for, is to have confidence from the guys around you, the coaching staff, other players.''Collins, a 16-year veteran with more than 40,000 yards passing, didn't take Wayne's comments personally."We've had several conversations,'' Collins said. "I saw what Reggie said. I didn't take offense to that. If anything, he's sticking up for his teammate, and I respect that.''Team general manager Chris Polian said management wasn't concerned about Wayne's comments."I don't think anybody blinked at that,'' Polian told The Associated Press. "Reggie is a true pro. He is a very proud player, a very good performer and equally good as a teammate. So I don't think anybody in this organization blinked at his comments.''Though Painter had a big game, Green Bay backup Graham Harrell provided the fireworks that decided the outcome.Harrell led Green Bay to a staggering 11 points in the final 35 seconds. He took advantage of two Colts' defensive penalties and, on fourth-and-10 from the Colts 11, he scrambled and found rookie tight end Ryan Taylor for the TD pass. Harrell connected with Taylor again for the 2-point conversion to tie it. After Green Bay recovered the onside kick, Harrell moved the Packers (2-1) into position for Mason Crosby's 50-yard field goal as time expired.Things started well for the Packers.Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers took Green Bay 81 yards on its second series and finished it with an 18-yard TD pass to Jermichael Finley over the arms of linebacker Pat Angerer. Green Bay went 61 yards on its next series, and Crosby's 26-yard field goal made it 10-0 early in the second quarter. It looked as if it would be another disappointing outing for Painter. On his first three series, Painter completed 1 of 5 passes for 7 yards before everything suddenly clicked.Painter led the Colts into field goal range before Adam Vinatieri missed a 39-yard field goal. Painter came right back on the next possession, exploited a blown coverage and found Wayne down the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown."That would never happen in the regular season,'' Wayne said. "I would never have that easy of a touchdown. But right now, we'll take it. Touchdown Colts.''On the Colts' next series, Painter ran the 2-minute drill to perfection, He threaded 36-yard pass down the right sideline to Pierre Garcon, then lobbed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chris Brooks in the left corner of the end zone to give Indy a 14-10 lead."Getting in those situations and getting some things right, that meant a lot,'' Painter said.Painter fumbled on Indy's first possession of the third quarter and he didn't return. He already had left an impression."I think he did good,'' Wayne said. "He came out tonight, did a good job. He responded well. He took everything in stride, and that's what he's been doing since I've known him.''Painter is uncertain about his future with the Colts."I don't have a whole lot of control over any of those decisions,'' he said. "Hopefully, I'll just continue to put myself in position to help the team.''Notes: Green Bay's starters played one half, while the Colts pulled their starters early in the third quarter. ... Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury. ... Collins was dressed in his familiar No. 5 jersey. Rookie punter Travis Baltz, who was wearing No. 5, switched to No. 2. ... Receivers Greg Jennings and Randall Cobb were among 11 Packers to sit out. Both have bruised knees. ... BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Back at practice for the first time, Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi is still not exactly certain how he got an injury that has kept him out of all contact drills.Massaquoi finally put on a helmet, pads, and caught passes during a non-contact drill Sunday. It was his first football-related action since coming to camp with his left foot in a cast and clouded by mystery."It was a bone chip, but I'm not sure when or where it came from,'' Massaquoi said, explaining for the first time the extent of the problem. "I didn't know it until I got here.''Getting back both Massaquoi and fellow receiver Carlton Mitchell, who missed two weeks with a finger injury, was good news for first-year coach Pat Shurmur. A large contingent of injured players once again did not practice, including Eric Steinbach, the starter at left guard out since Aug. 17 with a disc problem in his back."There's nothing that's been finally decided on his status,'' Shurmur said. "When he's back or not back, we'll make it known.''Massaquoi's injury was never disclosed until he came off the field Sunday. He revealed that he got hurt during "Camp Colt,'' a series of workouts hosted in Texas by Browns quarterback Colt McCoy. That was during the NFL lockout, which delayed the opening of all training camps."Long time, no see,'' Massaquoi said, perfectly describing his camp this year that has consisted of hours riding exercise bikes, watching video, and studying the new offense installed by Shurmur."From a mental aspect, it helped in that I watched and learned,'' Massaquoi said. "I love the offense. Now, I want to make up for lost time.''Massaquoi is expected to be a key target for McCoy. In 15 games last season, he had 36 catches for 483 yards and two touchdowns. That was slightly less than his production as a rookie in 2009. After being picked by Cleveland in the second round out of Georgia, Massaquoi tied for the team lead with 34 catches, good for 624 yards and three TDs."It's great to have Mo get in a few drills and get his feet under him,'' McCoy said. "We're going to slowly work him back in, and Carlton as well. It's encouraging for us.''Massaquoi said teammates never let him get too discouraged during his rehab. Mitchell said Massaquoi returned the favor, grilling him about offensive schemes as the duo went through boring exercises instead of playing."He would ask, 'On this play, where do you go?' " Mitchell said. "Mo is like my big brother. He helped a lot.''Mitchell had four screws surgically placed into his finger after injuring it during drills."Missing anything at this level is tough,'' said the second-year pro. "But you turn from player to coach, watch and try to learn everything.''Massaquoi said he is sure his study work has him comfortable enough to step in and play when the medical staff gives him clearance to go full-out. He and McCoy worked on a number of pass routes during the unofficial workouts in Texas."I had a jump on learning the playbook,'' Massaquoi said. "I know the offense very well and I'm excited to play in it.''Shurmur said he's not sure how much McCoy and other starters will play in Cleveland's final exhibition game, Thursday in Chicago against the Bears."We're going to go into this game and try to win it, so we'll see,'' Shurmur said, adding that rookie Jason Pinkston and veteran John Greco will get plenty of work at Steinbach's spot."In the next couple weeks, we'll make the decision on who finally makes the roster and who plays at that left guard spot.''NOTES: Eight players, none with NFL experience, were waived before practice: QB Troy Weatherhead; K Jeff Wolfert; WRs Johnathan Haggerty and Juan Nunez; DL Kyle Anderson and Jabari Fletcher and DBs Darian Hagan and Brett Johnson. ... Shurmur said he's not certain about depth at running back behind Payton Hillis. He's encouraged by the progress of Montario Hardesty from knee surgery and rookie Owen Marecic, but concerned by Brandon Jackson's toe injury and rookie Armond Smith's fumbles.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning could be back on the active roster in the next two weeks. If not, the Indianapolis Colts will have to play the first six games without the four-time MVP. League rules require players on the physically unable to perform list to be activated by the team's final cutdown, Sept. 3, or to sit out an additional six weeks. Conventional wisdom suggests Manning will be activated soon, something coach Jim Caldwell acknowledged Friday night after a 24-21 loss to Green Bay. "I would say that it's certainly a realistic possibility here and it could happen shortly," Caldwell said. That's the closest Caldwell has come to say when Manning might return. Irene pushes Jets-Giants game back to Monday With seemingly everything else in the New York City area set to close this weekend the subway system, JFK airport, my favorite knish stand as the region prepares for Hurricane Irene, the Giants have announced that their game against the Jets will be postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. The game had been scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., but with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo requesting that the federal government declare a state of emergency and President Obama granting his wish, it seemed foolhardy to hold the game in what figures to be nasty -- and potentially dangerous -- weather. In a statement released by the team, owner John Mara -- who consulted with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Jets owner Woody Johnson and commissioner Roger Goodell -- said the decision to move the game was based on the safety and well being of all. Which, of course, is the most important thing of all. Broncos LB Williams leaves game with sprained elbow DENVER -- Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams has left the game against the Seattle Seahawks with a sprained right elbow. Williams was injured when he tackled Seattle running back Thomas Clayton after a 2-yard gain with 9:15 left in the first quarter. Williams left the field and went to the Denver locker room. The Broncos said Williams will not return to the game. Williams has led the Broncos in tackling the last two seasons and in three of the last four years. New security at Candlestick means booting tailgaters SAN FRANCISCO -- Football fans held spirited tailgating parties as usual on what so far was a tame summer day at Candlestick Park before the 49ers hosted Houston on Saturday night, a week after things turned violent during an exhibition game with the rival Oakland Raiders. Yet fans were being watched much more carefully this week. Police officers on foot patroled throughout the parking lots outside Candlestick and also inside the stadium, while others monitored the scene on motorcycles. Security personnel working the event were asking tailgaters to leave the parking lots after kickoff under new security measures introduced by the team in the wake of what happened. Two men were shot in a parking lot after the Niners' 17-3 win over Oakland last Saturday. Another man was beaten unconscious earlier in a bathroom, and a brawl involving several fans during the game was captured on video and replayed on the Internet. Judge Nelson dismisses Tom Brady, et al vs. NFL ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The legal fight between the NFL and its players is officially over. U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson in St. Paul, Minn., issued an order Friday that formally dismissed the antitrust lawsuit brought against the league on March 11 by a group of players headlined by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The lockout began the next day and lasted 4 months. The new collective bargaining agreement was signed on Aug. 5. Nelson wrote Friday that the owners and the players "have at all times acted with the utmost integrity and in the best interests of football." The regular season starts on Sept. 8 when the defending champion Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints. 49ers to meet with Gore representative on Mon. SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers will meet Monday with Frank Gore's representative about a new contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press on Saturday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the privacy surrounding contract talks, confirmed a meeting is scheduled between the team and Drew Rosenhaus. Gore's unsettled contract situation has been a point of frustration during training camp for the two-time Pro Bowler, though he has said he will accept becoming a free agent after this season if he doesn't get a new deal. Gore would like a long-term contract to stay put with the 49ers, and new coach Jim Harbaugh is optimistic it will happen. General manager Trent Baalke said this past week he would like to make Gore a "49er for life." Gore has said he hopes to receive a new deal before the Sept. 11 opener against the defending NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks. UpdatedAug 24, 2011 6:25 AM ETThe Bears accomplished the impossiblethe other night by making a meaningless exhibition gamemeaningful.Americans can't agree on much. My goodness, some even believethat Jim Carrey movies still are humorous, that Congress isn'tinsane and that athletes' tweets are the gospel.Nothing is unanimous in this country.Except, 100 percent of Americans agree that the NFL shouldeliminate exhibition games, conduct them in private or pay peopleto witness them instead of charging season-ticket holders. However, apparently the Bears made these exercises innothingness be something by allowing 9 sacks the other night to thesad sacks from Buffalo. In a way this was progress. Last season the Bears allowed 9 sacks in the firsthalf alone against the Giants. Coincidentally, that's the team thattees off on them again Monday night in the Meadowlands. The Bears' answered their primaryquestionmark against the Bills with an exclamation mark, as in "Oh,no!"Ever since, when the talk of the town isn't Carlos Zambrano'szaniness it's that the Bears' offensive line is so overpaidthat it's going to lead us into a double-dip recession. If I had a nickel for every word uttered on the radio andprinted on sports pages lamenting these 300-plus-pound Bears tackles, guards and centerWell, I'd have enough money to join Big Z in a plush retirementhome somewhere.Instead, I'm left back here on the farm to lend perspective tothe Bears' madness.First of all, everybody, relax and assume the worst. Limit yourdisappointment by figuring right off that the O in the Bears' O-line isn't an alphabet Obut a numerical zer0.Then keep telling yourself that head coach Lovie Smith, offensive coordinator Mike Martz and offensive-line coach Mike Ticewill fill enough sandbags before the Sept. 11 season opener toprevent the levees in front of Jay Cutler and Matt Forte frombreaking.Or maybe not.The off-season lockout allowed Bears coaches enough time to inserta rookie at right tackle, move a right tackle to left tackle, convert a guard to center, anoint a bust-out tackle at guard andinsist that an immature 2010 guard is a mature 2011 guard.(Maybe the Cubs could move Geovany Soto to third base, makeCarlos Marmol a first baseman, bench Starlin Castro, change DarwinBarney's name to Barney Darwin, play Tom Ricketts at shortstop and declare themselves world champions.)Seriously, I'm only kidding about this zer0-line thing becausethere's nothing to panic about yet. The Bears have nearly a month to makethree more meaningless exhibition games meaningful. After this week the conversation will be that the line canrun-block but not pass-block. In two weeks it'll be that an injuredlineman is terrible but irreplaceable. In three weeks it'll be thatZambrano should be signed to replace the exiled Olin Kreutz atcenter. Before the Bears line up for real there willbe more shuffling of the offensive line, with some of the no-namesplaying now replaced by no-names to be named later. All kidding aside, I think the Bears' zer0-line has potential tobecome an O-line. The problem is that it might not happen beforeCutler and Forte are hospitalized.Doubts about that are why the Bears' worthless exhibition gamessuddenly matter.mimremTerms & Conditions |Privacy |Copyright |? 2009 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. 2011-Aug-24 - Miles Austin Jersey Blue
UpdatedAug 24, 2011 6:12 PM ETFLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP)Matt Ryan says this is the week the Falcons need to find theiroffensive rhythm. There have been too many mistakes and penalties and too fewpoints for Atlanta through two preseason losses. There was no signof panic at Wednesday's practice, but there is a sense of urgencythat this is the week to establish momentum.''Week 3 is always a good week of the preseason,'' Ryan saidWednesday. ''It's the first week you really get into a game-weekschedule and start to prepare a little bit for your opponent. It'sbeen good to get back into that routine.''Our hope is we do clean up some of those things and we aresharper this week.''The first-team offense managed only one field goal afterstarting two first-quarter possessions on Jacksonville's side ofthe field in last week's 15-13 loss to the Jaguars. A false-startpenalty hurt one drive. An intentional grounding call against Ryanstopped the second drive.Ryan and the other starters are expected to play at least thefirst half in Saturday night's game at Pittsburgh.''We want to see some efficiency in all three phases, not juston the offensive side of the ball,'' said coach Mike Smith. ''Wewant to get out there and move the football and ultimately the wayyou're judged is by the number of points you put on thescoreboard.''We'd like to see a clean first half from that group.''The visit to Pittsburgh doesn't provide the ideal setting tobuild offensive confidence. The Falcons opened the 2010 season witha 15-9 overtime loss to the Steelers in Ryan's only game of theseason without a touchdown pass.Ryan has only two TD passes - both to Harry Douglas - inpreseason losses to Miami and Jacksonville. The Falcons have added rookie receiver Julio Jones to an offensethat returns most of its top weapons from a 13-3 season. Ryan, receiver Roddy White, running back Michael Turner, tight end TonyGonzalez and fullback Ovie Mughelli are coming off Pro Bowlseasons. The Falcons re-signed two of their three free agents on theoffensive line. The offense looks deep after the team re-signedbackup running back Jason Snelling, drafted running back JacquizzRodgers and recently added veteran tight end Reggie Kelly.Another reason for optimism has been the play of Douglas, whohad a 76-yard touchdown catch from Ryan as the offensive highlightin the loss at Jacksonville.Douglas missed the 2009 season following knee surgery and sayshe feels stronger in his second year back. The Falcons are looking for more explosive plays this season.Douglas could be in position for more big plays if opposingdefenses focus on White and Jones in three-receiver formations.''My best attributes are my speed and my quickness,'' Douglassaid Wednesday. ''When I'm able to use it, I'm able to help my teamout and put us in good positions.''As camp has gone on, I'm starting to feel better than I didbefore I got hurt. Once again I can just come out here and play andallow myself to just be myself and do what the coaches ask me todo.''The Falcons already list the 6-foot-3 Jones, the sixth overallpick from Alabama, as the starter with White in the baseoffense.White returned to practice on Wednesday. He missed two daysafter taking a hit to his thigh in the Jacksonville game.Jones has four catches for 73 yards in the first two preseasongames. The 6-foot-3 Jones has impressed his teammates with hissize, speed and work ethic.''He has that kind of attitude where he wants to be the best, you can tell,'' Gonzalez said. ''He wants to learn. He doesn't mindputting in the work. There's a difference between saying 'I want tobe the best' and saying `I'm willing to be the best.'''He's willing to be a great football player in thisleague.''Gonzalez said Jones is just another reason the offense will befine.''We're a good team,'' he said. ''We were good on offense lastyear. I think a lot of people forget about that, it seems like. We're going to do the same things we did last year that made ussuccessful and then add to it, and obviously Julio is going to helpus out a lot on that.''NOTES: Smith said defensive end Ray Edwards should make hispreseason debut this week after recovering from offseason kneesurgery. ... WR John Matthews was signed. He played in two games in the 2010 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.WR Brooks Foster was waived after the team signed Matthews.Undrafted rookie OT Tyler Donahue was signed. He was a two-year starter at Bowling Green who'd signed a contract earlier in the preseason with the St. Louis Rams.PLAYER NOTESWhile Chad Henne excelled on Friday night, backup QB Matt Moore wasn't bad during the second half. He completed 6 of his 10 attempts for 73 yards.Running backs Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets combined to run for 50 yards on 14 carries against the Panthers.A week after returning a punt for a touchdown in his first preseason game, undrafted rookie WR Phillip Livas had a quieter game against Carolina. He gained 11 yards on two punt returns.Sparano said he has been pleased with the offensive line overall but that he'd like to see faster play from guards Vernon Carey and Richie Incognito and from C Mike Pouncey.Pouncey, though, took a giant step in practice last week, Sparano said. The Dolphins' first-round draft pick has solidified himself in the middle of the offensive line.BATTLE OF THE WEEK The battle at defensive end continues to be an interesting one. Jared Odrick, the team's first-round pick in 2010, was buried on the depth chart a little more than a week ago but he started at right over Randy Starks against the Panthers. Odrick is competing to win back the starting job he lost to injury at the beginning of the 2010 season.OTHER BATTLE FRONTS Dolphins camp has been thin on position battles but the other primary one to watch comes at free safety, where incumbent Chris Clemons is attempting to fight off Reshad Jones, who had three tackles against Carolina. Both players have gone back and forth throughout the preseason.ROOKIE REPORT It was a good week for the Dolphins' first two draft picks - Pouncey and RB Daniel Thomas. Outside of struggling with shotgun snaps here and there, Pouncey had his best week of camp and he seems to be becoming more comfortable by the day. Thomas, meanwhile, ran for 52 yards on 12 carries against the Panthers. It was a quieter week for WR Clyde Gates and H-back Charles Clay, but seventh-round CB Jimmy Wilson continues to impress in the secondary.INJURY REPORTLT Jake Long knee has finally been taken off the PUP list and has been cleared to resume practicing. After sitting out about a week's worth of practices, CB Will Allen knee returned to practice last week but sat out the game against Carolina. He said he was hoping to play in that game.Backup C Joe Berger sat out the Carolina game and the team's final two practices of the week with what coach Tony Sparano described as a shoulder issue.Reserve WR Patrick Carter played on Friday against the Panthers but was on crutches on Saturday.LB Austin Spitler and TE Mickey Shuler both sat out practice last week and participated in various rehab work. The team has not specified their injuries.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange. IRVING, Texas AP - The Super Bowl isn't coming to Cowboys Stadium, and nobody is talking about the main tenant playing in February. It's hard to tell what to expect from the Dallas Cowboys this season.Surely they can't be as bad as their 1-7 start last season. And they probably won't be as good as the division champs who went 11-5 the year before. Here's the really confusing part: The roster hasn't changed much. Some veterans have left, but there haven't been any of the splashy arrivals you'd expect from team owner Jerry Jones. The most notable changes are the guys in charge, coach Jason Garrett and new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.Garrett became interim coach in the middle of last season and immediately shook up things. Practices went faster and were more physical. Digital clocks were installed throughout team headquarters to eliminate excuses for being late. The team went 5-3 the rest of the way, despite backup Jon Kitna and third-stringer Stephen McGee taking all the snaps.Jones liked what he saw enough to keep Garrett, and the Princeton grad was smart enough to make sure everything would be done his way.His culture change has continued in ways big and small, from grumpy veterans who've been dumped to the "Carpe Diem" sign players now see on their way to and from the practice field. That certainly wasn't left by coach Wade Phillips."We always talked about the importance of being great each and every day," Garrett said. "We talk about the importance of letting last year's team go, and that it's a new team. You can have the exact same collection of coaches and players and the team from year to year changes and you have to redevelop that chemistry and all that goes with putting a team together. If we had won the Super Bowl last year we'd be preaching the same thing."We were 6-10, and I'd be lying to you if I said that doesn't kind of sit in everybody's craw as extra motivation. We're focused on today, we're putting last year behind us, and hopefully we'll stack some good days together and give ourselves a chance to be a good football team."Pretty vanilla stuff, right? That's where Ryan comes in.The son of bombastic Buddy architect of the 46 defense run by the 1985 Chicago Bears and the guy who once took a swing at a fellow coordinator during a game and twin of audacious Rex the coach who's guided the Jets to the AFC title game in each of his first two seasons and also made headlines for his outsized personality, Rob could be described as the anti-Garrett.Just look at his protruding belly and long silvery hair. Or listen to what he said about the Eagles after they became the popular pick to win it all this season: "I don't know if we win the all-hype team. That might have gone to someone else, but we're going to kick their rear when we play them."Pass-rush specialist DeMarcus Ware wasn't sure if Ryan was a coach "or a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider." But like the rest of the defensive players, he's quickly fallen in love with Ryan's style and his playbook, which is full of unpredictable ways of getting to the quarterback. That's a huge selling point to the players because predictability is often cited as the reason Dallas went from giving up the second-fewest points in the NFL in 2009 to allowing the most points in franchise history in 2010."I've had a lot of coaches that are fun and personable, real characters, but they weren't very good football coaches," veteran inside linebacker Keith Brooking said. "He's a heck of a football coach, too. That makes it even more exciting to play for him."Ryan won two Super Bowls as linebackers coach in New England, and he's been defensive coordinator in Oakland and Cleveland. Ware is a great talent to build around, having led the NFL in sacks two of the last three seasons, and Jay Ratliff gives him another dynamic player up front. The problem is in the secondary, which was woeful last season, especially at safety. Abram Elam followed Ryan from the Browns to the Cowboys, and his knowledge of the system should help. The offense is mostly the same that Garrett has been running since becoming offensive coordinator in 2007.Tony Romo is back from a broken collarbone that ended his 2010 season in October, and Dez Bryant is over his season-ending ankle injury and his drama-filled offseason. The dazzling young receiver will start opposite Miles Austin, and alongside tight end Jason Witten, giving Dallas a potent passing game.Felix Jones is the unquestioned featured back and he's gotten off to a strong start in the preseason. The big question on offense is the line. There will be two first-time starters, including 20-year-old top pick Tyron Smith. Then again, last year's line was among the problems, so change there could be a good thing. And developing youngsters on the line is something this club has long neglected.Ultimately, that could be symbolic of what this season is about: getting ready for the future.Garrett could be in charge for a while. Maybe not a Landry-like 29 years, but probably more than five, the most anyone has lasted under Jones. So this year will be about laying a foundation, on and off the field. Veterans who don't like the changes likely will be the ones who find their job security challenged. Most predictions have the Cowboys finishing around 8-8. As far as transition years go, that might not be so bad."There are times when you have your highs and you have your lows; I think we've had that," Ware said. "So, right now, we're right in the middle, and we're climbing." &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. AP - Shonn Greene's foot is ready for football again. The New York Jets running back missed the team's 27-7 win over Cincinnati on Sunday night because of an infection that caused his foot to swell last week. He said Tuesday the foot is feeling fine and he expects to play in the Jets' next preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night."I'm good to go," he said after the team's morning walkthrough.Coach Rex Ryan also anticipates Greene playing Saturday. Greene, who'll be the starter this season, practiced for the first time since last Thursday as he went through individual and team drills. The team initially called it a "low-grade skin infection," but Greene specified that a corn between two of his toes got infected. Greene was never concerned that the infection would be a serious condition that could affect his availability the rest of the preseason."I think it was just a media thing that everybody gets all hyped up about," he said.Greene was treated with antibiotics and was told to stay off his feet to prevent further swelling and irritation."It was nothing with the skin," he said. "It was between the toes. I know there were stories flying here and there. It wasn't anything that was as bad as everyone made it seem."The infection was discovered last week when Greene was having a callus removed. When the news first came out that Greene had a skin infection, some wondered if it could be a staph infection - something that has been an occasional problem in NFL locker rooms in recent years."It was nothing like that," Greene said.He watched the game from his home in New Jersey, itching to be out on the field, even if it was just preseason."It was kind of boring because I wasn't there and I felt like I was supposed to be there," he said. "It was kind of weird."The Jets' running game struggled with the first-team offense against the Bengals, rushing for just 16 yards - all by LaDainian Tomlinson - with Greene sidelined. New York's final rushing numbers, 156 yards, ended up being solid. But, almost half of them came on one play when Chris Jennings ran for 69 yards right before the 2-minute warning in the fourth quarter."Right now, we probably need to run the ball a little better," Ryan said.Despite the Jets wanting Mark Sanchez to air things out a little more this season, especially with Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason all here, Ryan insists the team will stick to its offensive blueprint."Our mentality is never going to change," he said. "Ground-and-pound is something I always want to do. Being able to run the football is how you can win in this league."Meanwhile, Ryan said backup quarterback Mark Brunell strained right calf and guard Trevor Canfield left knee would be sidelined for practice. Brunell missed the game after being injured in practice Friday, but Ryan thinks he'll be fine by the start of the regular season.Tight end Jeff Cumberland left knee/hamstring didn't practice, while nose tackle Sione Pouha left knee and linebacker Nick Bellore right calf took part only in individual and position drills. Mason left knee, linebacker Bart Scott left leg, defensive end Marcus Dixon left knee, linebacker Calvin Pace left groin and right guard Brandon Moore, who hasn't played this preseason while recovering from offseason hip surgery, all participated in most team drills.Offensive lineman Rob Turner, who broke his right leg in the preseason opener at Houston, will be out "several weeks," according to Ryan, but won't be put on injured reserve yet.Notes: Ryan said playing the Giants in preseason isn't as big a deal this summer because the teams play in Week 16 of the regular season. "If we weren't playing each other in the regular season, it would be because there's more bragging rights," he said. ... Ryan said he was "confused" by comments made by former defensive end Vernon Gholston, now with Chicago, after the Bears' preseason loss to the Giants on Monday night. Gholston told reporters he didn't think he necessarily got a fair shot with the Jets in three seasons - which included no sacks - after being the No. 6 overall pick. "I don't agree with him on that," Ryan said. "My job isn't to make one player better or to feature one player." Gholston was cut by the Jets before the lockout, and reportedly said he thought Ryan had preconceived ideas of what kind of player he was before he became coach - something Ryan didn't dispute. "I thought he was getting better," Ryan added. "Do I think he'll ever be Deacon Jones? No, but I'm pretty comfortable with myself. Nobody likes to hear negative comments or whatever, but if that's how he feels, that's how he feels." & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p; Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. Al Davis has been called many things in his legendary tenure as the managing general partner of the Oakland Raiders. Pioneer, visionary, revolutionary, and a number of things perhaps not suitable for print as well. &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; But absent and hands off are rarely included on the list … at least until now, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News.Per Kawakami, the 82-year-old Raiders owner has not made one single appearance at the Raiders training camp at Napa, Calif., in the nearly three weeks since it opened. That is especially odd, considering the Raiders are breaking in yet another new head coach in Hue Jackson this summer.Certainly questions of Davis' health and well-being factor in anytime he is not seen for so long. But for now, on site at least, Jackson is getting the opportunity to run the show and put as much of his own stamp on the team as can be done in the long shadow cast by Davis.Perhaps defensive tackle Tommie Kelly put it best though when he said, "The old man's always around even when he isn't around.”Follow me on Twitter TitanInsider247 and terrymc13Terry McCormick covers the Titans for TitanInsider
Dont read into Vick's night vs. Steelers &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; Michael Vick(notes) didn"t play good football last night in Pittsburgh. The numbers: 5-12 for 47-yards along with three interceptions. Not what you should see from your No.1 QB in August. However, when you take a closer look at the three picks that the Eagles QB threw vs. the Steelers, this isn"t anything you can"t correct And that"s why Vick needs to get back in the film room, watch the tape and make these simple adjustments. Let"s take a quick look at his three interceptions…1. Didn"t force FS Ryan Clark(notes) to hold his alignment. If you are going to throw a 9 route (fade) up the numbers, the QB has to hold the FS on his landmark and cut down the angle to the football. That is all about "eyes” for Vick. Lock in on a vertical route vs. a veteran safety like Clark and he will break before the ball is even thrown. That"s too easy.2. Ball placement trying to hit the crossing route. The Eagles will run short-to-intermediate crossing routes all season long as part of their "Hi-Lo” concepts. A major part of Andy Reid"s game plan. But vs. NFL DBs playing in a trail position, you can"t put the ball on the back shoulder of the WR. An interception every time in this situation if you don"t target the up-field shoulder of the WR (away from the DB). &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; 3. I saw a frustrated QB on Vick"s third interception of the night. Pocket collapses and Vick shows us just how good he is at escaping pressure. But what does he do next? Force the ball into coverage. All this amounts to is bad decision making. The last interception isn"t about technique, mechanics or reading coverages. Vick threw this one up.Again, don"t read too much into one night in August. Was it good enough? Not even close. However, we are talking about three interceptions that can be easily corrected when the QB sits down to turn on the film.Follow me on Twitter: MattBowen41wholesale sports jerseys, wholesale nba jerseys, wholesale custom jerseys, wholesale rockets jersey, wholesale nhl jerseys, wholesale lakers jersey, wholesale mavericks jersey, wholesale ncaa jerseys, wholesale clippers jersey, wholesale soccer jerseys, wholesale jerseys free shipping, wholesale mlb jerseys, wholesale nuggets jersey, wholesale pistons jersey, wholesale hawks jersey, cheap wholesale authentic jerseys, wholesale jerseys usa, wholesale authentic jerseys, wholesale bulls jersey, wholesale football jerseys, wholesale cavaliers jersey, wholesale pacers jersey, wholesale baseball jerseys, wholesale nfl jerseys, wholesale jerseys, wholesale celtics jersey

Negotiators for the NFL and the players union will meet with anti-dopingexperts next week as they try to reach an agreement on HGH testing before thestart of the season, people familiar with the negotiations told The AssociatedPress.Though the league and union reached a general agreement in their new labordeal to test for human growth hormone, the union is waiting to see the specificsof the program before giving its final OK.The union has asked the World Anti-Doping Agency for documentation about theaccuracy of the seven-year-old HGH test. &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & amp;nbsp; &a mp;nbsp; &am p;nbsp; & ;nbsp; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; People familiar with the negotiations, who did not want their names usedbecause the talks were supposed to remain confidential, said the meeting withofficials from WADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and other experts is set fornext week, with the goal of answering all questions about the test. The union, long skeptical about blood tests that must be used to detect HGH,wants to review the information before agreeing to any test. Officials from theNFL, which has pushed for HGH testing since 2008, said they were surprised atthe union's reluctance to sign off on the testing. The HGH test has beenavailable and widely accepted by scientists and Olympic sports organizationssince 2004."To go through an entire two-year-plus period where there was no discussionconcerning the accuracy of the test, then suddenly, to see discussions about thetest and the science arise in the last 24 hours of negotiations, it does notseem to be based on concern for the facts," said Adolpho Birch, the NFL'ssenior vice president of law and labor policy.NFLPA spokesman George Atallah did not return messages left by AP seekingcomment. As part of the collective-bargaining agreement signed earlier this month, the NFL Players Association and league confirmed "that the program on anabolicsteroids and related substances will include both annual blood testing andrandom blood testing for human growth hormone."But the union wanted to see the details before officially agreeing toanything, and they have not been worked out."We said we would agree to it when we were satisfied with the testing, theprocedures, and more importantly, the reliability of the testing available," aperson familiar with the union's stance told the AP. The person spoke on thecondition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations. If no agreement on HGH testing is reached, the league would operate underits old policy, which did not test for HGH. Birch, in charge of the NFL'stesting program, said that could take one of the union's top prioritiesathird-party arbitration system to review positive tests and their subsequentpenaltiesoff the table."Beyond that, there's little use in speculating," Birch said when askedwhat the NFL could do if the union doesn't agree to HGH testing.Aware of the players' longstanding resistance to blood testing, the NFL wasamong the leagues who funneled money into research for a urine test that woulddetect HGH. Any such test, however, remains years away, so the league pushed forblood testing, saying it would be an important part of any new contract.Anti-doping experts have long criticized the NFL and Major League Baseballfor not testing for HGH. Baseball tests minor league players, and earlier thisweek, Rockies Triple-A player Mike Jacobs received a 50-game suspension after apositive test for HGH and became the first North American pro athlete to bepunished for taking the drug."You have to question their motives why, especially in light of the recentpositive in baseball, that they're retreating from wanting to put this inplace," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. UpdatedAug 19, 2011 12:30 AM ETPITTSBURGH (AP)Ben Roethlisberger running around, extending plays, throwingtouchdowns. Hines Ward dancing in the end zone, not on the ballroomfloor. Troy Polamalu picking off a pass. James Harrison wreakinghavoc in the backfield.Does the calendar say August or December? For a couple ofdazzling quarters on Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers madeit hard to tell the difference.Roethlisberger threw for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns andPittsburgh's defense put an exclamation point to Philadelphia starMichael Vick's miserable day, intercepting three of his passes inthe first half of a remarkably easy 24-14 victory.Yes, it's only the preseason. But after sleepwalking through aloss to Washington a week ago, the defending AFC championsdelivered a reminder to their cross-state rivals about which teamfrom Pennsylvania has played in three of the last six SuperBowls.''That's the desired response we were looking for,'' saidPittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin.Particularly from a defense energized by the return of All ProsTroy Polamalu and James Harrison. The veterans sat last week torest up and watched as the lowly Redskins moved the ball withease.Philadelphia found the going significantly more difficult.Harrison teamed with Donovan Warren for a sack while Polamaluplayed with his usual reckless abandon, including a 36-yard freewheeling return of an interception that ended with Vick drillingthe reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year in the knees.Polamalu brushed off Vick's hit, saying he's hit opponents thesame way plenty of times.''I was just playing ball just like he was playing ball,''Polamalu said.Even if Vick hardly played like his usual self on a night inwhich he finished with more tackles than touchdowns. He completedjust 5 of 12 passes for 47 yards and showed little of the sharpnessthat's drawn praise from coach Andy Reid during training camp.It was a frustrating end to a frustrating day for the 2010 NFLComeback Player of the Year. He spent the morning clarifyingcomments he made in a ''GQ'' article in which he suggested NFLCommissioner Roger Goodell convinced him to sign with the Eagles asa backup two years ago rather than compete for a starting jobelsewhere.Vick stressed it was his decision to sign with Philadelphia andrefused to blame the mini-furor surrounding the story for hislackluster performance.''Once I was in the game, the issue was just pressing to putpoints on the board,'' Vick said. ''I just got caught up in gettingdown 14-0.''Then again, Vick got little help on either side of the ball.Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson, playing for the firsttime this preseason after ending his contract holdout, had twocatches for eight yards as the Eagles struggled to gain anymomentum.''We're all in this together and we all stunk tonight,'' Reidsaid.Particularly in the first half as Pittsburgh's starters - andmore than a few reserves - outplayed Philadelphia'sfirst-stringers.Pittsburgh outgained Philadelphia 262-71 in the opening 30minutes, taking some of the sizzle out of one of the league's mosthyped teams.''We just have to go back to the drawing board,'' saidPhiladelphia defensive lineman Trent Cole. ''That's why they callit the preseason. We're going to get back together. We still have agreat team, I don't care what anybody says.''Philadelphia made such a splash during the free agency period -signing Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive linemenJason Babin and Cullen Jenkins and quarterback Vince Young amongothers - that Young dubbed his new squad ''The Dream Team.''The Steelers did little to downplay the hype surrounding theEagles, with safety Ryan Clark saying he's only too happy to letPhiladelphia ''deal with the limelight.''The Eagles looked uncomfortable under the glare while playing infront of a national TV audience against a team still smarting froma loss to Green Bay in the Super Bowl.Pittsburgh had no such issues. Roethlisberger led two longtouchdown drives, hitting Antonio Brown on a 29-yard score in thefirst quarter and finding Ward in the back of the end zone in thesecond.''We found ways to make plays and guys found ways to get open,''Roethlisberger said. ''I found a way to get them the ball.''And keep Philadelphia's defense on the field.Pittsburgh converted 7 of 10 third downs in the opening half andpunted only once as Roethlisberger easily made plays againstPhiladelphia's revamped secondary. The addition of Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie wassupposed to shore up the Eagles' suspect pass defense, yet thesecondary consistently ran into trouble.Brown torched Asante Samuel on a double-move on the firsttouchdown, and Ward ended a 96-yard drive with a 20-yard scoringgrab after Roethlisberger extended the play by breakingcontainment.Ward, who won ''Dancing With the Stars'' during the offseason, celebrated with a couple of well-executed Samba.''All the guys have been ragging on me all season about doingsomething,'' Ward said. While Ward, Roethlisberger and running back Rashard Mendenhallwere in baseball caps by the second quarter, Vick played the entirehalf. The Steelers responded by keeping most of the starting defenseon the field. Vick could do little with his arm or his legs eventhough Pittsburgh was forced to use a patchwork secondary thanks toinjuries to corners Ike Taylor (broken left thumb) and BryantMcFadden (hamstring).Usual nickelback William Gay and reserve Keenan Lewis started inplace of the two veterans and held Jackson and others in check. Gayblanketed the speedy wideout when Vick tried to hit Jackson with adeep ball on Philadelphia's first play from scrimmage, and Lewiseasily picked off Vick when the quarterback overthrew Riley Cooperdown the sideline. The Steelers weren't done. Polamalu, slowed in the playoffs lastyear with an Achilles' injury, appeared to be fine playing at fullspeed for the first time in more than six months.Even if he knows he may have gotten carried away during hisinterception return. He weaved his way into Philadelphia territoryand at one point faked a pitch during the return. He held onto theball and paid the price when Vick nailed him.Tomlin glared at his star safety when Polamalu jogged off thefield. If he finds himself with the ball in his hands again beforethe games start for real, don't expect him to hang onto it.''I was running out of gas,'' he said.wholesale dodgers jersey, wholesale orioles jersey, wholesale baseball jerseys, wholesale custom jerseys, wholesale expos jersey, wholesale twins jersey, wholesale yankees jersey, wholesale indians jersey, wholesale colts jersey, wholesale reds jersey, wholesale angels jersey, wholesale brewers jersey, wholesale astros jersey, wholesale red sox jersey, wholesale ncaa jerseys, wholesale sports jerseys, wholesale white sox jersey, wholesale marlins jersey, wholesale rockies jersey, cheap wholesale authentic jerseys, wholesale nba jerseys, wholesale cubs jersey, wholesale jerseys usa, wholesale mets jersey, wholesale braves jersey, wholesale mlb jerseys, wholesale jerseys free shipping, wholesale tigers jersey, wholesale royals jersey

UpdatedAug 19, 2011 6:26 AM ETBy RICK STROUDTimes Staff WriterTAMPA - The Bucs were not ready for the Patriotsor Tom Brady. Not the way the three-time Super Bowl winner quick-pitched theiryoung defense during Thursday's 31-14 Tampa Bay loss before 49,313at Raymond James Stadium.Brady threw two touchdown passes and led scoring drives on fourof New England's first five series. But things were moving so fast and furious, Bucs defensive end Gerald McCoysaid, it was like trying to play tag on a freeway."(The Patriots) come out, huddle, turn around, snap, huddle,"the second-year player said. Andfor bad measure, they had eight penalties for 65 yards. The Bucs yielded scoring drives of 64,61, 53 and 60 yards. Brady, a spectator in a 47-12 win atJacksonville last week, performed bloodless laser surgery. He went 11-of-19 for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the firsthalf. Both touchdown passes came ridiculously easy. AaronHernandez, a former Florida tight end, appeared to run right pastrookie middle linebacker Mason Foster for a 16-yarder. On the nextdrive, Chad Ochocinco got behind safety Sean Jones for an8-yarder.Meanwhile, Freeman didn't have enough protection from theoffensive line to step into many throws. He finished 5-of-10 for 33yards and was sacked twice for 17 yards."This isn't something you're going to question your abilities, question what you're doing as a team," Freeman said. "But at thesame time, it's something that says, 'Hey, we've got to find a wayto come out and be more sharp on the opening drive.'"We wanted to get something going. But obviously, there's a bigpicture in mind. This game is not going to count for or against usin any way, shape or form."To a man, Bucs players believed the Patriotsdid a lot more game planning than normal for a preseason game. Notthat it mattered. Foster played into the third quarter, finishingwith one tackle and an illegal hit on Ochocinco."Mason Foster, he needed to see Tom Brady," McCoy said. "Hedidn't need to see (Chiefs quarterback Tyler Palko). Now he knowsthe preseason is a glorified scrimmage. .(First-round draft pick and defensive end Adrian Clayborn) cameto me and said, 'Oh, my God. It was so fast!' UpdatedAug 19, 2011 5:32 PM ETNAPA, Calif. (AP)Before he transformed Stanford from a laughingstock into apowerhouse and achieved his goal of being an NFL head coach taskedwith rebuilding the floundering San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaughgot his full-time coaching career started across the bay inOakland.Fresh off the end of a 15-year career as an NFL quarterback,Harbaugh joined the Oakland Raiders in 2002 near the lowest rung ofthe coaching ladder as an offensive assistant on a team that wenton to win the AFC championship.Despite the long days and little pay, Harbaugh took plenty outof his two years on Bill Callahan's staff with the Raiders where hebecame a favorite of owner Al Davis. He learned how to coach.''I'd never coached before full time, so how to be a coach, howto be detailed, so many things, sitting in on personnel meetingsfrom the best, Mr. Davis, and Bill Callahan, tremendous footballcoach, and exposed to great players like Rich Gannon,'' Harbaughsaid. ''So many things, a thousand things really that I learnedover there.''Harbaugh will get to show the Raiders some of what he learned onSaturday night when he leads his new team into the annual Battle ofthe Bay exhibition game.Harbaugh went from offensive assistant with the Raiders in 2002to quarterbacks coach the following season. Then to Davis'disappointment, Harbaugh left to become the head coach at theUniversity of San Diego.''He wanted me to stay,'' Harbaugh said. ''At the time hethought I really wanted to be a pro coach and I told him that I wasgoing to go back and coach in college and emulate the way he haddone his career, where he had started off as a college coach.''That's when Davis pointed out a small difference in the twomen's paths.''He told me that he had been at U-S-C, not U-S-D,'' Harbaughsaid.Harbaugh went 29-6 in three years at San Diego before takingover a one-win Stanford team for the 2007 season. Harbaughresurrected the Cardinal, leading them to a bowl game in his thirdseason and then a 12-1 mark and No. 4 national ranking that was thehighest season-ending ranking for the school in more than 70years.He parlayed that success into the job with the 49ers, where hehopes to lead this once-proud franchise back to the playoffs forthe first time since 2002.There was speculation that Harbaugh could be a candidate for theRaiders job, but he decided to go to the 49ers and Oakland promotedoffensive coordinator Hue Jackson to the head spot.Jackson is plenty familiar with Harbaugh and his family, havingserved as an assistant with his brother, John, on the BaltimoreRavens staff.''He is a fine football coach,'' Jackson said. ''I really wasimpressed (with) what he did at Stanford and obviously he had sometime here at the Raiders before. So I'm looking forward to, youknow, matching wits against them this weekend.''Along with being Harbaugh's coaching debut at Candlestick Parkit is also a surprising return to the stadium for Alex Smith. Whenhe walked away in January, he hardly figured he would be returningwith the home team less than eight months later.Instead, the 2005 No. 1 overall pick signed a one-year freeagent deal to return to the 49ers - despite the boos from his owncrowd, despite the critics and skeptics.Smith struggled in the exhibition opener at New Orleans, going 2for 7 for 10 yards in a 24-3 loss to the Saints. Then he even heardthe boos from fans during last Sunday's FanFest at Candlestick.''My mindset is a play at a time, put some good playstogether,'' Smith said. ''Not get too carried away with anythingelse, fans or a mistake or whatever. ... Throw some good balls, getsome rhythm for this offense. We really struggled to get any rhythmlast week. That's really the next step. Besides that, I'm reallynot worried about anything.''The Raiders' first-team offense fared better than Smith and theNiners did in their exhibition debut, with Jason Campbell leadingtwo lengthy drives that led to one field goal in a 24-18 loss tothe Arizona Cardinals.Oakland committed 10 penalties, managed just one touchdown onfive trips inside the Arizona 30 in the game and struggled in passdefense after the starters left. That leaves plenty of room forimprovement against the 49ers.''I expect us to be a very dominant defense and I want to seeour defense play that way,'' Jackson said. ''I expect us to be anoffense that can execute at a high level and I expect us to dothat. I expect this team to start taking the next step. Again, everything headed toward that opening game, but we need to improvein all areas. I need to improve coaching. We need to improveplaying.''---AP Sports Writer Janie McCauley in Santa Clara, Calif.,contributed to this report.---Josh Dubow can be reached at /JoshDubowAP

UpdatedAug 16, 2011 12:30 AM ETMonday's kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and odds are Texans quarterback Matt Schaub willhave traded his helmet for a baseball cap or visor by, say, 7:25p.m. or so. And it's not just Schaub. Coach Gary Kubiak reiteratedSaturday that his starters likely will line up for only 10-12 playsin the preseason opener against the New York Jets. Given all theinjuries last season on the defensive side of the ball, limitingsnaps there - even amid a transition to a new scheme - islogical.Doing the same for an offense that ranked third in the NFL intotal offense (386.6 yards per game), fourth in passing (259),seventh in rushing (127.6) and ninth in scoring (24.4 points pergame) last season makes sense, too, especially since virtually allof the key components from that arsenal are returning. Familiarityobviously matters, but how much? "We've been working hard, but it'sjust different with live bullets, in live game action," Schaubsaid. "We want to see where we're at. No matter where you are as ateam - whether you've been together two years or 10 years - youstill have to develop that rhythm, that timing and your identity asa group." Last year, Schaub completed five of six passes for 78yards and a touchdown in a brief appearance against Arizona in hispreseason debut, so scratch the notion he might need moremeaningful exhibition snaps. But then again, sloppiness must beavoided. "We have so many players and only so many reps to goaround," Schaub said. "We're an offense that's been around eachother for numerous years. We want to make sure we're in a goodplace, sharp in what we're doing." Starting strong According toright tackle Eric Winston, the task beginning Monday is dominance. Now is not the time for complacency, even if it's just a handful ofplays. After all, it's the Jets, owners of a blitz-happy defensethat should provide a stout test. "As soon as you start thinkingyou're OK, you're not," he said. "You never stay the same in thisleague; you're either going to get better or worse. "We were fourthor fifth in a lot of categories last year, but until we're first inpoints scored and all of those similar categories, it's not goodenough." Winston takes this approach to an unusual level. Asix-year veteran, Winston said with a straight face that he isfocused solely on making the team. "There are 90 guys out therelooking for a spot (on the 53-man roster)," he said. "I have toprove I can be one of those 53 guys. Nothing has changed. I have togo at it the same way. I'm going to be grinding. "If I get 10(snaps), I get 10. If I get 30, I get 30. If I play the whole game,it doesn't matter. You have to go out there and perform." Tight endOwen Daniels, a fellow starter, believes an emphasis on startingquicker should be a priority. In 2010, the Texans rolled up just 159.1 of those386.6 yards per game in the first half of games. They were greatlate, scoring the fourth-most points (8.0 points per game) and aleague-high 112.2 yards from scrimmage in the fourth quarter. "Ithink we just want, as an offense, to just be consistent," Danielssaid. "We want to be able to get off to a good start, put a gooddrive together, however long coach lets us stay out there. "I thinkthose are the glaring spots from last year - starting faster andclosing things out." Injuries a concern Of course, there are noguarantees the prolific offense will resume where it left off.Arian Foster, the reigning rushing champion, has been sidelinedwith a hamstring issue. He won't go against the Jets, leaving thecarries to Derrick Ward, Chris Ogbonnaya and Javarris Williams, whoon Friday was signed off the street. Ben Tate and Steve Slaton alsoare nursing hamstring injuries. Plus, the man who opened holes forFoster, Ward and Slaton a year ago, Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach,is now with Baltimore. Whether it's James Casey, Lawrence Vickersor rookie Zac Pauga, a replacement must be found. For an offense sodependent on the run, those are somewhat significant concerns tobring into a game considered by some as meaningless. Not everyonefeels that way, though. "You never know how many snaps you're goingto get, but you have to make them count, especially in preseasongames," Winston said. "What you put on film is going to be seenaround the league, and that's important." jeffrey.martin@chron.comtwitter.com/jaymart ... UpdatedAug 16, 2011 12:26 PM ETByline: Rich Campbell, THE WASHINGTON TIMESIt was one of those moments when you have to rub your eyes tomakesure what you're seeing is real. Only a few feet of grass werevisible between Brandon Banks' heels and the back of the end zonewhen he caught the kickoff Friday night.Surely he would just kneel for a touchback and give theWashingtonRedskins possession at their 20-yard line.In a flash, though, Banks was racing across midfield. And whenyouconsider the special set of circumstances, it wasn't thatsurprising, after all.Banks has unique speed, and it was a preseason game. And mostnotably, the NFL has implemented new kickoff rules this season. To reduce the frequency of high-impact collisions typical onkickoffs, the league has required teams to kick off from their35-yard line instead of the 30. The intent is to reduce the amountof returns, but Banks wouldn't let an opportunity pass.If Danny [Smith, special teams coach] tells me I can bring itout, that'swhat I'm going to do, Banks said after Sunday's practice.I'm going to try to run it back every time. The Redskins' top return man, however, realizes the new rule diminishes his value. It is what it is, he conceded. I've got to follow the rules. The kickoffs in Washington's 16-7 victory over Pittsburgh onFriday were a microcosm of the league-wide results during the firstweekend of preseason games. Of the seven kickoffs in the game,Banks' 58-yard return was the only one that didn't result in atouchback.Redskins kicker Graham Gano bootedall five of his kickoffs through the end zone.I hope they keep it that way, Gano said with a smile. It was alotof fun.Fun for him, maybe. Rather boring, though, for those who lookedforward to one of the sport's most unpredictable plays. And for Smith, it means more strategic planning on both sides ofthe ball.He decides the circumstances under which Banks or any Redskins return man can run the ballout of the end zone. Banks had his permission to bring it outFriday night. There's a lot that goes into that thing: Who's your returner? How good is your coverage? What's the hang time? Smith said. Wehave a standard, and you have to meet certain things to be able tobring the ball out. It's a major drag for Banks, who became something of a star lastseason as a return specialist on a team with a dearth ofplaymakers. He took one kickoff back 96 yards for a touchdownagainst Detroit. At 5-7, 155 pounds, his speed and shiftiness are critical assetsin the return game, but his size limits his effectiveness as areceiver. He has to make his mark on special teams.I'm not too happy with [the rule], and I think Brandon canagree, said Redskins receiver Terrence Austin, who kneeled on a kickoff in the end zone for a touchback Friday. He's a special guy. If it's 8 yards deep, he's the type of guy thatwould be able to take it out. Also hurting Banks' push to make the roster again in his secondNFL season is lingering soreness in his surgically repaired leftknee. He missed practice Sunday after having a few CCs of fluiddrained from it, coach Mike Shanahan said. That's part of camp, part of the process, Shanahan said. As hegets in better football shape, he's going to feel better in gamesituations. Our game plan is to have him full speed by the firstgame of theseason.Banks is eager to be full-speed ahead, too, both health-wise andcoming out of the end zone.Whenever Danny gives me the green light, he said, that's when Igo.CAPTION(S):Brandon Banks has blazing speed on kick returns, but his5-foot-7,155-pound frame limits his effectiveness as a receiver.Bears Johnny Knox Jersey, Jay Cutler Jersey Outlet, Cheap Jay Cutler Jersey, Johnny Knox Jersey Outlet, Throwback Jay Cutler Jersey, Premier Johnny Knox Jersey, Bears Jay Cutler Jersey, Premier Jay Cutler Jersey, Jay Cutler Jersey Outlet, Replica Jay Cutler Jersey, cheap Jay Cutler Jersey, Jay Cutler Jersey 6, NFL Jay Cutler Jersey, Authentic Johnny Knox Jersey, Reebok Johnny Knox Jersey, Jay Cutler Jersey On sale, Reebok Jay Cutler Jersey, Cheap Johnny Knox Jersey, Authentic Jay Cutler Jersey, Jay Cutler Jersey Free shipping, Replica Johnny Knox Jersey

2011-Aug-16 - NFL Darren McFadden Jersey
SAN DIEGO AP - The moment Patrick Crayton was asked about Dallas, a big smile appeared on his face."I'm definitely ready," the Chargers receiver said. "I can't wait until Wednesday."Crayton played six years for the Cowboys and still lives near Dallas, where he grew up. Despite asking for his release twice in 2010, he has fond memories of his time with the Cowboys, an 82-game stint, before being traded to San Diego 10 days before the opener last year. He'll get a chance to face them this weekend. The Chargers fly Wednesday to the Dallas area, where they'll practice with the Cowboys before playing them Sunday night."It was a wonderful experience," Crayton said. "Made a bunch of friends. They'll be lifelong friends. Loved the fans. It's home, so it was a dream to play at home."But it will be Chargers garb that Crayton's wife and two sons wear in Texas, not the silver-and-blue apparel that Crayton favored as a boy.Nor will Crayton root for the Cowboys this year, although he will pull for several of his pals on the team.He has found a new home with the Chargers, averaging 18.4 yards per catch last year before a dislocated wrist ended his season in the 10th game."Everything about Dallas was great, but so was coming out here," Crayton said. The Chargers acquired him for a seventh-round draft pick, also the round in which Dallas drafted him in 2004.Crayton requested his release after the Cowboys drafted receiver Dez Bryant in the first round."Dez Bryant, that was almost like the icing on the cake," Crayton said after a recent practice. "A lot of people think it was just that, but there were other issues. There was other stuff that led up to that, where we almost tried to get a release before that."He declined to elaborate but said it wasn't easy to ask out, which his agent did again shortly before the trade. He hadn't caught a pass in the preseason."I would have loved to have played the rest of my career there," he said. "But sometimes things run their course. At that point, it was time to move on."He wrist injury, sustained when he landed in the end zone while scoring a touch down, is healed. He is in sync with quarterback Philip Rivers and the offense of coach Norv Turner, which is similar to the Cowboys offense of coach Jason Garrett, a quarterback under Turner with Dallas in 1993.As Turner saw more of Crayton, he found ways to accentuate the 6-foot 205-pound receiver."I love the slot," Crayton said, "because I love working the middle and the underneath stuff."Crayton has found the team's culture hospitable, too, impressed that the Chargers is made up of several veterans."We almost have a few more leaders in this locker room, which helps," he said. "When it's time for business, it's time for business. When it's time to hang out and have a little fun, they do that here. That's what you love about it, being able to separate the two."San Diego remains something of a mystery to him, however."I haven't been to the beach once, haven't been to the zoo, haven't been to Sea World," he said.Texas humidity, a far cry from the breezy comfort the Chargers have enjoyed this training camp, along with what Crayton calls "genuine Southern hospitality" will not be the only reminders that he's back home. Football-mad fans will give him another clue."There are movies made about football in Texas," he said. "Out on the West Coast, it's a little bit different. We have passionate fans. But I haven't seen a Chargers tattoo on anybody yet." &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press.
